Preparations for a nuclear attack: Thoughtful consideration
First off I do not think, or believe that Russia would attack the United States with Nuclear weapons-namely Ballistic missiles. I do think that Russia would use tactical missiles in the Mid East conflict if deemed necessary in the proposed Sunni Turkey-Saudi Arabia conflict. This includes the 25 small states pledging Islamic subservience.
I think that North Korea poses a real threat to the United States and their arms are growing more powerful each year. Although North Korea is touted as being ruled by a nutcase family for decades they have progressed with diligence towards ballistic missiles, surface to air missiles, surface-to-surface missiles, and rockets. All this is supported by a large million-man army utilizing modern weapons, training, as well as their own support mechanized war material.
Since North Korea has only signed an armistice, and not a treaty with South Korea the constant conflict over border rights continue. Both countries are antagonistic to one another, although treaty talks have been going on for decades. General Douglass McArthur in 1952 pushed the North Korean army to the China border, heralded as a success in the Korean War of the early 1950’s. China “volunteers” amassed “hoards” of fighters that pushed the United Nation forces back to the present divided country borders.
The United States, since the end of the Word War II conflict, has had deteriorating support from Japan, Okinawa, and South Korean peoples. The governments however, are always vying for more support with war materials. Incidentally for the Veterans of those conflicts information, the Japanese have built a new fighter aircraft named for the World War II Japanese fighter-the Zero.
Japan is a likely target for an intermediate range Ballistic missile from North Korea and of course when the rhetoric threat is published, the US Navy Frigates rush to aid the Japanese, touting their 40 year old designed, but upgraded, radar and missiles. However, the new THAAD missile system and radar is being made available, and now deployed in the Sea of Japan around North Korea with a Carrier Task Force. The Fukishima plight of nuclear contamination is a constant warning to the Japanese Government to continue to close down nuclear reactors, but since they are the only mainstay to “clean powerful energy” necessary to the economic success of Japan’s industry, albeit also the production of plutonium for nuclear weapons, they may already have, but are obviously seeking to construct. Japan’s constitution prohibits the development of a force of arms, or construction of war materials.
North Korea’s Ballistic missile could very well be targeting a Japanese nuclear reactor that would create more destruction that the missile itself. More likely the North Korean Government would launch several ICBM’s toward the United States. These missiles may have the capacity to strike not only the west coast but also further inland, guided perhaps by the recent launching of two sophisticated satellites. The United States Navy is tasked, since the President Kennedy days, to use missile defense against this possible attack. (See my previous article in this series about how missiles are guided).
There does exist a possible Islamic attack on the United States proper, probably Washington DC area, military bases, and a primary target wherever the most people congregate respect to the size of the dirty bomb. A dirty bomb is radiation dispersal, not a blast wave, a firestorm, followed by massive radiation Alfa and Beta particles. The dirty bomb is simple in that radioactive material may be obtained from hospitals, dentists, colleges, laboratories, and military bases. This is initiated by an explosive devise. The size, altitude, weather conditions, blast potential determines the fallout of deadly sickening poison. Most likely these dirty bombs would be smuggled into the United States from hostile states in the Mid East, or Africa proper, where real weapons grade radioactive material is available.
The United States does possess radiation detectors in the civilian population as well as military and government buildings. Other detection devices are installed, or hand carried by members of the US military and US Coast Guard.
ICBM’s are guided by gyros, used in the old obsolete missiles, or the newer satellite control. This proposes a problem with hostile states launching killer satellites in advance-say months or years, which when triggered would explode, or fire a small missile, rendering our guiding and positioning GPS satellites inoperable. There are international treaties about not employing this type of satellite. Since we have a poor ability to locate and track asteroids entering the Earths orbit, it is understandable that more radars and telemetry is necessary. Treaties in a war state are always disregarded.
Preparation is contemplative. I have found that most people are ignorant of the issues or dependent upon the governments to provide solace. You have at best 30 minutes to prepare if you have not already done so.
If you are within a mile and a half of a target blast of say, 10 tons of TNT measure for a nuclear blast (and this is a small blast) you will disappear becoming vaporized. At a distance of say 3 miles you might survive at the rate of 50% chance. That is 50% for you and death for the neighbor standing on the street corner while you were shuffling newspapers in the concrete basement. At the 3 mile limit and on out say, 5 miles the radiation effect will eat people. The further out and the more cover you have will determine how much radiation you receive. The kill rate is measured by intensity or the radiation from exposed surfaces, dust, contaminated foods. For those possessing a Geiger counter 600 roentgens and you are dead within the hour, less measurement gives hope starting at 150 roentgens. (This is taken from my records in the Navy years back). You may expect radiation burns that increase from Ground Zero the closer you are, at the 3-mile circle of the blast, you may just be a crispy critter.
Let us examine the nuclear explosion. There is an initial burning ball of light, which is so bright looking at this wonder will cause you to become blind. This is immediately followed by gamma radiation moving at the speed of light, which is in itself death. More to come indeed. The blast wave is like a Class 10 hurricane wind that flattens houses, soft structures, and people are just swept up in the maelstrom becoming just parts and pieces.
The blast wave sucks the 5000F heat within itself and as you stick your head out of the basement looking at the destruction you are in for a surprise. Everything is on fire, including people parts. Then this firestorm heat is sucked back into the fireball and tons of dust and debris starts to spread and fall out. This reverse flow of the firestorm will probably suck the oxygen out of your basement and that includes you. Survival from a firestorm is unlikely. The radioactive fallout is the major lingering thousand-year radiation that nothing grows in it, nothing lives in it.
Obviously the further out you are from the believed GROUND ZERO blast in a reinforced concrete structure such as the White House, or a bunker basement, the safer you will be. If you survive the blast you admire your preparations by sealing all the windows, heat and air conditioner vents, and doors with Gorilla tape, you might also have pre- measured the doors and windows. Like a Hurricane preparedness advocate you have the plywood ready to be nailed in place before hand, yet who knows in advance of an attack? The reasoning for boarding up the home is “looters”.
Radioactive Black Rain will fall and hopefully be washed away while your spouse demands you drive the family automobile to safety. Bad choice! Freeways and lesser roads are jammed tight. If you can get out using back roads your “Bugout” packs are ready. Extra foods, water, guns, blankets and advanced first aid accessories are necessary.
Where is safety? I have been advocating for years to have a prepared retreat in the country hayfields. Even an old camping trailer already set up provides shelter if installed and not looted. I notice several of my neighbors have purchased trailers, new trailers, apparently ready to flee something or other, as they never use them.
This might be a basic plan. We will continue this scenario with future articles as you are probably straining the eyeballs reading this much. Time to reflect. I keep reflecting on my proposed book.
