Diabetes-cause, symptoms, and wholistic treatment. Part 1
I started researching Diabetes some months ago and find that the “cures” are targeted to the specific (myriad) symptom of the disease, therefore the disease is not being addressed to the source of the disease-the pancreas. This means that you must become aware of what you can do to prevent disease; and once identified as becoming pre-diabetic or diabetic what further steps have been successful to alleviate, or arrest this life threatening disease.
I now want to quote from our previously discussed 1910 published “ The People’s Home Library” page 216, “… as the disease continues the patient notices he passes urine more frequently and in larger quantities…He develops more or less thirst, and loses sexual desire…he begins to feel languid and lazy… an excess appetite is developed…the thirst, appetite, and loss of strength and flesh are usually in proportion to the quantity of the urine passed and the amount of sugar in it… the first symptom may be repeated crops of boils or carbuncles…extreme constipation…the disease is fatal…”
Diabetes has been recognized for centuries and commented on by noted physicians and healers of those times. One of the earliest commentaries was that urine on the ground would attract sweet ants from those with the disease. Centuries later the “sugar” concept was further studied. Today we are more advanced, but the symptoms remain the same.
Today when you or a loved one sees a physician with adverse symptoms the physician will take urine and a blood sample. Then you can call your friends and neighbors with the statement, as most do, “I’ve got the sugars.” You are diagnosed with a pre-diabetic condition, or with Diabetes. This is not good.
Depending upon a rating scale the good Doctor will offer you modern medications to reduce what symptoms are most prevalent and suggest a new diet. Until you are flat on your back you will ignore the good Doctor refusing for all sorts of rationalizations such as: cost of medications, being in the loop, “Big Pharmacies” are out to scam you, self-medication, and out right denial. The disease gets worse and new problems arise in time; as this is a slow methodical deteriorating disease that often kills you in the end after years of increasing miserable and costly problems.
Diabetes may show up as cold feet and legs, in later years since there is reduced blood flow to the extremities; foot and leg nerve pain is constant, they will be amputated because gangrene sets in and they rot. Of course there are triglycerides that clog your heart arteries and you become subject to heart attacks and strokes. These will leave you like a carrot. Kidneys may fail at some point and you cannot filter your blood. Kidney dialysis may be a help with you sitting on a blood-cleaning machine twice a week. Of course with the kidneys not working you can, as a male, expect additional prostrate disorder and of course cystitis forming in the bladder which may result in cancer. Your health becomes more impaired, your brain functions in a fog, you are more irritable, poor judgment and mood swings are common. Liver impairment is noticeable with pains at first under the right shoulder, then hardening of the liver which effects a number of blood cleaning, hormonal, and of course digestion functions.
The root cause of diabetes, Type I, which strikes in childhood, and Type II that usually strikes in mid life is the small organ in the body known as the pancreas. This vital organ is more commonly understood by the term: Pancreatic Cancer, which has no cure and is obviously fatal. Sometimes people hear of Pancreatitis: a painful disorder that drives you to the Emergency Room and is generally treatable. To understand that the known pancreas function is to produce a hormone known as “Insulin” into the blood stream and a rich “pancreatic enzyme juice” into the beginning of the small intestine known as the duodenal papilla.
The pancreas may produce 100% effective hormone and enzymes, or perhaps less. Or nothing. This could be an inherited predisposition as well as being caused by modern diets since Diabetes strikes millions of people more and more in the western cultures. It should be noted that as we age-after 20-the body does not repair it self as well and this is a consideration. The stomach lining wears thin, and often milk intolerance develops. In the old days, people who developed this age related disorder turned to cheese.
To start our understanding of the diabetes disorder we examine what insulin does as it enters the body at the first signal from the small intestines once you have stuffed yourself.
Once you place food in your mouth that is the first step in the digestive process and you chew the food thoroughly, 60 times in fact to effect a complete mush. This forms what is known as a bolus and you swallow. Then you have conversation of pleasant things at the dinner table while enjoying soft dinner music.
Once the bolus slides down the esophagus into in the stomach, hydrochloric acid is secreted from the walls and a churning action is undertaken to mix the thoroughly chewed food into a chyme. The muscular action of the stomach “pushes” the chyme into the small intestine at the lower pyloric sphincter ring of muscle. Then it passes through the duodenum. Only water, salts, glucose and alcohol are absorbed through the stomach wall.
Herein the enzymes and hormones take action in the small intestines. Signals are sent to the gallbladder to create bile salts and pigments, which break down fats and oils. Being slightly alkaline, bile adjusts the pH of the chyme for the digestive process. Herein again, is where “bitters” have been known for centuries to follow a meal for a better digestive process. GERD victims take note.
The pancreas also produces “glucagon ” which encourages the liver to breakdown “glucagons”. This raises the blood glucose level. Insulin lowers glucose levels by facilitating the uptake of glucose in muscles- a form of energy. So now we have the major energy storage of glucose in the liver and to get that energy out to the muscles so you can jog is the pancreas that makes insulin.
Note the balance of the pH in the stomach and of course throughout the body. We pump anti-acid pills in our stomach all the times. Do you know that these pills, like Tums™ produce just chalk (calcium carbonate)? This is mainly an absorbent of the chyme. Consider bitters as an aid to digestion. However an imbalance of the pH in the bloodstream does not bode well for the pancreas hormone production and leaves one to consider that if the organ is not defective, perhaps we may be better able to regulate it with what we eat and how we eat, lest we develop diabetes uncontrolled.
The body, when looked at as a complex bio-machine requires energy to all its parts. The digestion process extracts blood sugars converted into glucose that flows all over the body and into the smallest capillaries. In times of energy needs, the liver pumps out more glucose to the blood stream. The pancreas pumps out the hormone insulin to regulate the absorption into the tissues. When there is a call for glucose and the insulin produced cannot regulate the absorption, then you have excess blood sugar. This is the classic test for diabetes.
Since the body is now struggling for energy and there is no glucose it turns to absorbing fat. This is known as “ketones” in the cells and manifests themselves as plaque (think bad cholesterol) that forms fat-ketone buildup in the arteries of the heart, blood vessels and in the tiny thread like capillaries. This is why the feet feel cold and with a lack of blood flow are first amputated. Your kidneys become clogged with fat. Now you are in more trouble.
Also these fatty plaques are deposited in the eye and all delicate organs. The body is trying to compensate for mismanagement of God’s healthy plan.
Nest week we will continue this saga of why you have diabetes and what we can do about it.
God Bless,
Old Timer,
