This year we will focus on food production-gardening articles, starting with the assumption that many of our new readers are in suburbia with limited space, poor soil, water restrictions, roaming pets and “I don?t know how to get started.”
Fear not! I will take you through A-Z gardening based on my research and experimentation over the past decades striving for a perpetual Eden in your back yard. Our approach will be God?s natural means, perhaps now a days called “Organic Gardening.”
The United Nations, World Food Bank, and Internet is alive with chatter about rising food prices and possible food shortages. Those who are prudent may want to start thinking about developing skills with gardening as once you master the technique you will certainly save money and have the confidence in knowing what you are eating is natural, healthful nutrition with no chemicals-just as nature intended.
For many new readers this will be an adventure in living.
To start us in the right direction I will be tasking you with some “homework.” I will be mentioning various books to read to complete your knowledge and develop insights that hopefully will lead you to surpass my teachings so that you can go on to teach your family and circle of friends who will be intrigued by your successes.
These books and publications are available free from your public library, US Government agencies and Internet resources. I encourage all readers who find new relevant material that sparks their interest to keep me “posted.” with new ideas. I will try to answer all e-mails in time-bear with me as I am gardening too.
Jon Jevons is still on the garden lecture circuit promoting gardening. His first book, a classic indeed, was: How to grow more vegetables on less space than you can imagine ?and was published by Ten Speed Press in Berkley California some 30, or so, years back. His focus was the raised bed technique. We will be discussing this method with our innovations to make your labors easier and easier as the years roll by.
One of my most enjoyable moments, between watching the bird feeders, is reading the garden seed catalogs that start to fill my mail box at Christmas time and on through the growing season. Our goal will be to have two successful growing seasons this year on into next winter. Below are my top five recommended garden seed catalogs:
